WHO IS PRAYING FOR ME?

by Sue Henley

The first time I saw him running down Highway 1-11 toward me, I immediately said, "Oh Lord...help him!"  He looked 90 years old, bowl-legged and not a hair on his head!  His gait was steady, but stiff, and as he raised his arm high to wave at me, he never lost a beat.  I was in total shock!  Why would a man THAT old be risking what life he had left?

Every morning when I saw him running, I'd send up a quick prayer for his safety!  All kinds of scenarios would run through my head.  Is he practicing for the Senior Citizen's Olympics?  Has he had chemo?  (Literally, you'd see his shiny bald head before you saw any other part of him.)  Did he not have a family?  What in the world was that crazy man doing?

One day, I saw him at a totally different part of the highway.  I had to be at work early and it was about 7 miles from our usual meeting place.  OH MY GOODNESS!  How far did he run every day?  Of course, coming from an 'exercise deficient' woman, that really worried me!  I made my prayer for him just a little longer!  The man fascinated me.  I'd wave like crazy every morning and he'd throw his arm up....again, never missing a beat....or step.  My admiration for this man grew.  If it was raining, unbearably hot, or even snowing...he was out there every morning.  A real hero.

Then it happened.  One morning he wasn't there.  The 20 miles I drove down Highway 1-11, I searched for him.  He was no where to be seen.

"Oh God...please let him be alright...be with him, watch over him.  Amen"

I tried not to panic!  He's probably at the Senior Olympics or visiting his wife at the nursing home.  No, who am I kidding?  He's probably got pneumonia from running in the rain yesterday.  WHERE IS HE?

For the next week, I went nuts.  No sign of the aged runner.  The highway seemed so long and lonesome.  I had come to depend on seeing him.  I prayed for him daily.

One morning, unexpectedly, there he was again.  Bald head shining, stiff bow-legged gait, and that arm flying up!  What a pleasure and a delight.  I'm sure I looked like a wild woman as I rolled my window down and madly waved at him!   For five years, I played this game with him.  Praying, smiling, waving, worrying and then euphoria when he was back.

One day as I saw him in the distance, I got brave.  I got out the new bottled water I'd bought and stored for him for two weeks.  I made a mental note (well, as best I could as a menopausal brain locked woman) of all the questions I had for him and I pulled my car over on the far side of the shoulder of the road.  I grabbed the bottled water and started walking toward him.  I held the water out in front of him and he came to a stop but continued to run in place.

"Hi, I'm Sue, and I've been praying for you every day whether you're running or not."   That's all I could get out.

He just smiled and said "Thank you! I appreciate the water, but mostly the prayers!" and he started running back down Highway 1-11.  Good g rief...he wasn't even that short of breath!

He ran about 10 feet and turned around and came back.  He hesitantly gave me a brief hug and said "I hope someone is praying for you!"  He threw his arm up and then he was running again.

He had managed to hug me without getting one drop of sweat of me.  He never told me his name.  I didn't find out why he ran, if he had a wife in the nursing home or any of the other million questions I'd had over the years.  That nameless man, who only looked 80 up close, left a profound impact on me with one statement.  I got back into my car wondering if anything I did made enough of an impact on anyone that I was worthy of asking the question...."Who is&nb sp;praying for me?"

I lost my husband last year and it's been the darkest year of my life, but, God is restoring the joy in my heart!  My two girls are wonderful!  Tiffany, my youngest is a missionary and has been to Africa, India and Spain in the past 15 months and Shanna is living in Nashville, so my house is quiet.  I continue to work full time with mentally and physically challenged adults...what a hoot!  I am blessed.
