Welcome to 2TheHeart!
There is a wonderful, mystical law of nature that the three things we crave most in life?happiness, freedom, and peace of mind?are always attained by giving them to someone else. ?Anonymous
I apologize for not sending out 2TheHeart this past week! (I've been sick.) There will be no 2TheHeart until August 23rd, when I will be announcing the 2004 Poetry Contest winners! I'll be spending next week visiting my Dad in CA and reviewing the contest submissions! In the meantime, below is a little story about a wonderful tradition that I hope inspires you as it did me!
"Pass Me On"
by Fred Nicholas
During a low point in my life, I was at a yard sale and came across an old, well-thumbed Bible. "How much?" I asked the woman presiding over the table.
She looked at me searchingly, and then surprised me by saying, "If you promise to read it, I'd like to give it to you for free."
I accepted both the Bible and the challenge. True to my promise, I read that Bible again and again, and as I did, things seemed to turn up for me. Eventually I bought myself a new Bible, and a day or so later when I picked up the old one, something strange happened. It was as though a jolt of electricity passed through my hands. The old book seemed to say, "Pass me on."
A few days later I was talking to a man who was deeply troubled. I told him he needed the kind of help to be found in the Bible. Since he did not own one, I offered him mine.
A year later I met the man again, but he was happier, more confident, and he told me that the old Bible had changed his life. "But I don't have it anymore," he said.
"Why?" I asked.
"Well," he said, "it looked so shabby I bought myself another one to carry to church." And then he looked at me quizzically, as though he wanted to say more.
"Yes?" I asked.
"You won't believe this, but one day I was dusting my bedside table after I bought the new Bible; and when my hand touched the old book, I felt a surge of electricity pass through me and?"
"The Bible spoke to you!" I exclaimed.
"Yes. 'Pass me on,' it said."
